I am your coach Kathryn Milliron! I have been a professional singer and vocal coach for over twenty years, and I’ve helped hundreds of singers find success professionally onstage and in other music related careers.
When I work with a new student for the first time, the very first principle that I teach them is the importance of relaxation in the body. Tension, is the enemy of any singer, for it prevents the voice from having the complete freedom it needs to perform naturally and comfortably.
The same holds true for all of us in every day life. When we have too much stress and tension, our bodies cannot function in a comfortable and healthy way. But too many people are not even aware of how excessively stressed out they are. We have become a society where too much stress is normal….to the point that we no longer recognize the stress until we reach a breaking point.
I’ve experienced this in my life. I’ve personally seen how an overabundance of stress can affect a person physically, mentally and emotionally. Back when I was in college, my life was a mess! I had no concept of how to reduce stress and I was REALLY stressed! A full class schedule, homework and a full time job were enough to stress me out. But the worst stress came from my extreme perfectionism. Everything had to be just right, and if it wasn’t……..well, the downpour of negativity followed.
All of this stress with no understanding of how it was affecting my life, and no tools to reduce the stress ended up creating a lot of issues in my life. At that time, I was clinically depressed and suffered from some pretty serious anxiety and panic attacks. I would wake up at night with my heart racing because of the anxiety. I was irritable and moody. My only source of comfort at that time was to eat to make myself feel better. And as a result, when I graduated, I weighed an astonishing 265 pounds. Not good for a 5’3″ frame!
I was miserable, uncomfortable in my own skin and did not know how to feel better.
After I graduated, I made a decision. I was tired of feeling as badly as I did. I was tired of the depression, the anxiety, the overeating……frankly, I was tired of being so stressed out all of the time.
So I began my journey of self discovery. A journey that took many years. I read many books, attended seminars and learned as much as I could about the different problems I was facing. But the breakthrough for my life actually came as I was teaching my students.
As I told you earlier, I have been a vocal coach for over twenty years. I was working with a voice class and we were focusing on relaxation. As I was putting together a lesson plan for the class I began working with different deep breathing and relaxation techniques for the class.
It was amazing how much better I felt after doing the exercises. I was much more relaxed, of course. But my depression wasn’t as pronounced. My anxiety wasn’t as bad. I didn’t feel all jittery and jumpy!
I continued doing the exercises on my own and within a few short weeks, my depression was pretty much gone. I no longer had the extreme anxiety either. I was sleeping better, I felt more alive. I was handling stressful situations more calmly. And I wasn’t craving as much junk food.
I still use all of the techniques and exercises that I learned. And I have been using them with students as well. I’ve seen others conquer a host of health concerns that were directly related to stress. And I’ve made it my purpose to learn as much as I could about stress and tension and how it can compromise your health and your life.
